Covent Garden, a lovely place where you could probably purchase led gu10 light bulbs now, was not always a lovely place. In the eighteenth century, Covent Garden was a famous red-light district. There was even a guide to facilitate finding certain prostitutes in the area, called ‘Harris’s List of Covent Garden Ladies’, which was the “essential guide and accessory for any serious gentleman of pleasure”. Betty Careless and Jane Douglass were two notable prostitutes who could be found in Covent Garden at the time. Betty Careless, born Elizabeth Carless, was an archetypal courtesan in her contemporary popular culture, her name, reputation, and beauty famous throughout London. Betty Careless is included in ‘Joe Miller’s Jests’ in which an admiring man compliments her legs, saying they are so alike they should surely be twins, to which Careless responded, “On no sir, for I have had more than one or two in between them”.
It doesn't feel that long ago that I had my graduation day, and had worried for weeks up until the day about what I was going to wear for it! Well, now it's my baby sister's big graduation day, it's come about so quickly I can't believe she's a fully educated adult now.
But most importantly, we're both stuck looking for the perfect outfits to wear for the day. Obviously hers is a bit more important (a bit!) but I'm panicking myself, they're always so formal and fancy! I'm looking online at women's party dresses for inspiration, and think I might go with a long (not maxi) dress with some sort of floral print as that's very in this season.

It's harder for my sister though, she's got to make sure it's formal enough, but she obviously wants to have something pretty on underneath the gown that's not too out there, but not too boring either! I'm making it my mission to find the best dresses for us both!

Maybe it's because I live in a stressful city, but the amount of horrible, angry, selfish people you encounter on a day to day basis on the train, in the street, walking the dog, (etc!) is astonishing, and enough to put you off people!
Anyway, last week I was printing off some CVs in an Internet cafe and typically walked out of the place without my usb flash drive, as I've done many a time before.
Usually when I've gone back the drive has been taken, thank you kind Internet users! This time I was really annoyed because I had important stuff on it, and by the time I realised I was really far away so I didn't bother to go back.
But today I got a random email from the Internet cafe saying my drive had been handed in and they retrieved my email address from my CV saved on it! They didn't have to do that, it was really nice of them and has really restored my faith in people!

Jobs jobs jobs!

05May11
I've been on a job application marathon! I didn't think it'd be so hard when I graduated university, I figured there would be loads of jobs to apply for and I'd get snapped up soon enough. But alas, it doesn't seem to be the case! A friend of mine came and stayed with me the past two nights and we were determined to apply for a hundred jobs and help each other with our applications. And it's great because she's not looking to get into media, she studied economics and business so we're not sat applying for the same jobs! I've been sat contacting The Independent, Getty, The Press Association and NME, while she's sat contacting Barclays, HSBC, Rowan Dartington and Shore Capital! It was a good way of applying for jobs actually, we lazed around in our pyjamas, put music on and ate junk food, then treated ourselves to a glass of wine in the evening - and we got so many applications done! Fingers crossed it worked! Photo: boeke (Flickr)

Benacasim

11Mar11
Ok, so I’m finally going to take the plunge and I’m going to hit up a festival in a foreign land and of course my first port of call is going to be Benacasim. The line-up has not been announced yet but I am already going to take the plunge and do it. It’s going to be amazing, I really can’t wait. We are going to get the plane over to Madrid first and see some sights whilst crashing in a motel then we are going to buy a car from Auto Mobile and set forth to conquer Spain and reach the festival. I’m so excited, my last great adventure before Graduation and the working world. Image: beebonscreen
